Ann Joppe-Mercure, Pottery

My clay work focuses on manipulation and work in a series. I throw pieces on the potters wheel then alter them with texture, carving and hand built elements. To date I have completed three series of 100 pieces each that formed art installations. The series were Peace Bells, Vessels of Hope and Luminaries – a Celebration of Light. Each piece in the series was unique and all were given away. This work was stoneware fired in an electric kiln to cone 6. Most of these pieces were completed at Burlington City Arts Pottery Studio where I do all my own work but they do the firing of the kilns. I am currently setting up my own studio complete with a kiln. I continue to make pieces as extensions of my series as new methods of design and technique develop over time.

In addition I study at Across the Grain studio with Sherry Corbin. My concentration there is altered thrown pieces that are often fired with processes such as Raku, pit firing and saggar firing. The studio facilitates the firing and I am a participant. The results are dramatic one of a kind pieces that are more art than functional.
