Artist Statement:
I started my journey as an artist painting old clogs and making them anew. There was something very satisfying about making a humdrum pair of clogs spectacular and special to wear again. My husband encouraged me to take a pottery class at AVA Gallery, and I was instantly enchanted with all that is clay.
I mostly hand-build my ceramics. While I do have a wheel, I prefer the unlimited freedom and possibilities that a fresh slab of clay affords me. I shape most of my slabs with simple forms and slump molds that I’ve made myself. My wheel work is mostly a base for a whimsical sculpture or carving.I hand-paint all of my bisqueware with glaze or underglaze. I am especially proud of my monochrome work, where I use black underglaze to paint the background of a scene, allowing the raw clay to shine through as white. It is tedious work, but deeply rewarding.
I love to explore new avenues and constantly push myself to try new things and evolve. I hope my art reflects the fun that I had creating the piece. Creating pottery is truly one of the biggest joys of my life.
