Abigail Bartell, Wearable Art

Abigail Bartell is a native Vermonter who lives and works in the Northeast Kingdom and has been making art for as long as she can remember. She works in watercolor, acrylic, and gouache, bookmaking, collage, bike tubes, digital illustration/design, and sculpture. Abigail received her BA in Art Education from Johnson State College (now Northern Vermont University), and her MA in Art and Design Education from Vermont College of Fine Arts. She has taught Visual Art to middle and high school students in Danville, Vermont for the past 16 years.

Abigail’s style combines traditional artmaking media and techniques with a deep appreciation of the whimsical and quirky. While drawing and painting remain the basis of her work, Abigail loves to create in a wide variety of materials. When asked “What do you do?” Abigail often has a difficult time assigning a single label to her work. Creating visual art is like breathing for Abigail- she works on multiple projects simultaneously, always has a sketchbook going (or five), and loves to learn new skills, methods, and media. Abigail’s inspiration comes from her passions for cooking, gardening, and the outdoors, as well as an appreciation for finding humor and beauty in the everyday.

Abigail lives in Danville, Vermont with her mathematician-fisherman partner, sons, two dogs, two cats, and a variety of chickens. When she’s not painting or teaching, Abigail cooks delicious meals from her garden, spends time with her family, promotes community art, explores quiet lakes on her paddleboard, and reads as many books as possible.

Abigail is a member of the Vermont Art Educators Association, The Vermont Watercolor Society, and 802 Arts House.
